Lauki – Doodhi – Bottle Gourd: The Veggie That Surprised My Taste Buds (and My Tummy!)

Hey everyone!

I am the kind of person who loves discovering new flavors and ingredients, especially when they are also good for me. That’s why I’m excited to share one of my recent finds: Lauki, the simplest of vegetables that has now become part of the kitchen requirements .

If this is your first time coming across it, you might think that lauki otherwise known as bottle gourd or doodhi is quite unremarkable on its exterior. To be quite truthful, you can consider this particular veggie to be quite the best-kept secret!

Frankly speaking, for a long time, I had somewhat developed a prejudice about lauki. It just seemed. . . well, boring. However, as I have gone alter to the type of meals I take, I thought it was about time I gave the spaghetti sauce a fair try. Oh how I am glad that I did so.

Here is why lauki wins me over:

  • Nutrient Powerhouse: Lauki is quite rich of some nutrients needed in the body including fibre, vitamin C, and potassium. It is also low in calories; thus it is friendly when I want to be on a low calorie diet.
  • Happy Tummy: If like me, you are having a sensitive tummy this is the kind of vegetable that will not upset your tummy. It is like a salve to the stomach; such is the effect of this vegetable.
  • Flavor Chameleon: This is where lauki really is a wonder. It is a clean pallete that absorbs the taste and flavors with which it is cooked. However with the right spices and herbs it can agreed be mouth watering.

My Favorite Lauki Recipe: Easy Weeknight Sabji is one of those tasty preparations that are quick to make and does not take much of the cook’s time. Here is one of those easy peasy lauki recipes that I would like to share with you for those blindly busy weeknights. It is so reassuring for the stomach, very nutritious and as spicy as you want it to be.

Think Outside The Sabji Box!: Don’t limit yourself to sabji though! Lauki is super versatile. You can use it in stir-fries, soups, curries, or even as a healthy snack in the form of crispy chips. Let your creativity run wild!
